Keeping Your Vehicles Legal on Any Route

If travel is required in a jurisdiction for which one of your vehicles does not have permanent permits (e.g., IFTA, IRP), a trip permit must be obtained. Understanding when and why trip permits are necessary is crucial for avoiding costly fines and delays in transportation logistics.

Permit Advisor

Our step-by-step wizard walks you through a series of questions to determine the exact federal and jurisdictional permits you’ll need to operate and transport a specific shipment. For any type of vehicle and any route, you’ll quickly know what trip permits are required, including temporary permits, fuel permits, oversize/overweight permits or specialty permits. You can also obtain the appropriate permit directly from our J. J. Keller® Permit Service.

Expert Tip

"If you frequently operate qualified vehicles interstate, you will most likely obtain permanent IFTA operating credentials. But if you have infrequent interstate trips, you may satisfy your IFTA obligations through temporary trip permits, which can be obtained from the intended states or provinces of travel, or from a third-party service. These are usually valid for a 72-hour period."
